Terrence Malick is set to return soon after four years since his last film The Secret Life with an ambitious mural of Jesus Christ: Gone with the Wind. Filming has wrapped up after a delay linked specifically to the Covid pandemic. True to his reputation as a perfectionist, the 79-year-old filmmaker spends a lot of time in the editing room.
“The film is currently in post-production. We have an incredible cast. This is another Terrence Malick project, this time shot in several different countries. It’s a pretty fantastic achievement from a production standpoint. Terry is very happy with the results so far, but no announcements yet.”– said producer Alex Boden at Variety’s microphone.
The Way of Wind presents several episodes from the life of Jesus, played by a select cast. Geza Rohrig (Son of Saul) portrays the Messiah. Matthias Schoenaerts plays the apostle Peter, and Aidan Turner plays Andre. For his part, Mark Rylance plays Satan in several versions, as he told us at Deauville in September 2019. Joseph Fiennes, Ben Kingsley and Matthew Kasowitz round out the film’s cast.
The French actor also celebrated his participation in Terrence Malick’s feature film on RFM, at the microphone of Bernard Montiel. Kasowitz wears Johnny’s costume. “brother of jesus”.
“There’s a scene where I’m yelling at Jesus; I’m telling him to quit smoking the joint and go help his mother get the cattle back.”she said.
If a director takes so long to edit his film, it’s because he’s in a rush for hours. Indeed, Terrence Malick was shooting 5 hours a day, when a normal film takes 30 minutes at most, explained Mathieu Kasowitz.
“This should have had 3,000 hours of rush! A movie could be 17 hours long”jokes the French actor and director. “It’s one of his most important films because Malick is very religious. I might have been upset during the editing, but the experience was great.”he concluded.
In any case, if the figure of 3,000 hours seems surreal and casual given by Kasowitz, it remains no less convincing given Malick’s method of letting the camera capture the slightest truth.
The Way of the Wind doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s coming soon.
