Rated 4.1 out of 5 This Prime Video series was canceled shortly after its renewal

This is bad news that dropped last Friday. Prime Video has suddenly decided to cancel the series The Extraordinary Team, we’re told variety. The series – which was one of our favorites last year – is a free adaptation of the Penny Marshall-directed film of the same name, notably starring Geena Davis, Madonna and Tom Hanks.

It’s the talented Abbi Jacobson – revealed in the comedy Broad City – who is the creator and portrays one of the main characters. The series immerses us in the America of the 1940s, when the country has just entered the Second World War. While men go to the front, women have the opportunity to emancipate themselves, especially through sports.

The Extraordinary Team is the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball and who made it happen. But the series didn’t just chronicle the transformation of ordinary women into professional athletes.

Abbi Jacobson’s series was also an excuse to talk about racism and sexism, following the journey of a series of characters who make their own way, be it on the field, in the professional league (with very strict rules) and in their personal lives. For this, Abbie Jacobson surrounded herself with a very talented, albeit lesser-known cast, including D’Arcy Carden, Shanti Adams, Melanie Field and Kate Berlanti.

More than 2 seasons

In April of last year, Prime Video announced that the series had been renewed for a second season, which was cut to just four episodes, half as many as the first. But according to Variety, this drastic change is a result of the ongoing strikes in Hollywood.

With the writers and actors still on strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), there was no hope of a Season 2 launch anytime soon. Had it been retained, it would not have landed on the platform until 2025, with Season 1 airing in August 2022.

This is the second Prime Video series to see the ax fall. On the outside, Flynne’s Worlds with Chloe Grace Moretz suffered the same cruel fate.

In an Instagram post yesterday, Abby Jacobson responded to the news and thanked fans for supporting the show. He revealed that he was mostly upset that Amazon blamed the decision on the strike:

How lucky I am to be able to tell these stories and portray this character that I love so much. This is a rare thing in life. That’s why I’m sad today. Attributing this cancellation strike is foolish and cowardly. But that’s not what it’s about. This applies to all the ways in which this series has been tested. Not today.

This post is about a special series I directed with so many incredibly talented artists, actors, writers and crew. A series that I am very proud of. Full of tales worth of stories. Full of heart, soul and dignity. Thank you for watching.

The breakthrough comes after just a month ago, Amazon Studios head of television Vernon Sanders made comments that hinted transfer That the platform will be ready to continue the series after the second season…
