The sixth and final season of Peaky Blinders has just hit Netflix and fans will be delighted to reunite with the Shelby family. Sadly, this last member of the British series is missing: Helen Macror, translator of Aunt Paul, who died in April 2021 of cancer.
If the Peaky Blinders team paid homage to the actress with a clipper clip tailored by Helen Macror during the filming, they also focused on her in the first episode of Season 6, which is dedicated to her.
Creator Stephen Knight had to rewrite the script for the final blast of the Peaky Blinders episodes to bring about the disappearance of an actor who could not shoot any of the scenes during filming. Thus, Aunt Paul became one of the victims of the assassination attempt on the fascist politician Oswald Mosle.
This is Captain Swing who thwarted the assassination attempt by bringing back Tommy Shelby (Killian Murphy) and returning him the bodies of Paul, Aberama and Barney. Later, Shelby’s entire family gathers at Paul’s funeral, according to the traditions of the Roma community.
This event will put his son Michael in such an angry state that he wants to take revenge on a tribe he considers responsible and kills him. Paul’s death affects all members of the family, each of whom will sink in their own way and will have to face their demons and various problems.
Discussing the absence of Helen Macror was an important topic for showman Stephen Knight. That’s what he explained RadioTimes that “The loss of a person, the loss of Helen was a real tragedy. The loss of a character is infinitesimally small compared to the loss of a person. And yet, we have to deal with it.”
Stephen Knight had high hopes for Season 6 of Aunt Paul, which began filming in January 2021, but he had to decide before he left: “At first Paul was in the season and then slowly it became clear that he would be able to do it less and less. So we came to the point where we knew he could not have been at all this season.
Then you have to deal with the consequences first in terms of the story, devote seconds to the loss of the character, but then know that it has a reflection in the real world with the loss of a person. So we have to try to balance all this and I think we did it well. “
Although Paul is not physically there, the showman has been able to lift his spirits throughout the season, especially thanks to his voice, as Killian Murphy explains. RadioTimes :
“It’s a big loss, hard to understand. Because he was a matriarch. As a character, but also as a person. But he’s still in season 6. Steven managed to keep him very, very present, which I think is a great tribute to Helen.”
