Few would expect the latest chapter in a saga to become the most successful horror film of the year, but it did.
The Supernatural franchise was already written off by many. The series started out as an old-school horror adventure that still managed to set itself apart from the competition with its quirky design and innovative premise. The sequels never managed to achieve this quality and became increasingly entangled in overly complicated stories about ghosts and worlds in between.
Supernatural: The Red Door is a reboot of the series. In terms of storyline, the film was a direct continuation of Insidious: Chapter 2, as parts 3 and 4 work as prequel. In addition, series veteran Patrick Wilson returns in a dual role: not only does the actor appear in front of the camera in the horror film, but he also celebrates his directorial debut.
And apparently the new approach has paid off, because The Red Door is not only the most successful spin-off of the franchise, but also, as of the first weekend of August, the highest-grossing horror film of 2023 worldwide! With a worldwide box office result of $182.5 million, the film managed to leave behind such genre rivals as M3GAN and Scream 6.
