If there was a movie multiverse, then we could see Zack Snyder start making a Star Wars movie. Only then did the project conceived by the American filmmaker ten years ago finally see the light of day as a completely independent double feature produced by Netflix called Rebel Moon.
During an interview with our magazine colleagues SlashFilmProducers Deborah Snyder and Eric Newman returned to the genesis of the project. The idea for the film came to Zack Snyder in 2012, after the purchase of Lucasfilm LLC. by Disney as a kind of spatial remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai.
The Japanese filmmaker’s work is regularly cited by George Lucas as one of the main sources of inspiration for Star Wars. Thus, this unofficial remake could perfectly fit into the world of the famous sci-fi franchise. But Deborah Snyder was happy that the film ended up not being related to Star Wars:
At one point it was a Star Wars movie, but I never wanted that. I remember saying to Zack, “I feel like your hands are going to be tied with this franchise, but your movie can live independently of the other movies.” So I was quite happy that the project didn’t happen because I always thought it would be good for Zach.
Producer Eric Newman recalls a phone conversation with the filmmaker about the project: “Fack Star Wars! Let’s make a TV show instead.” However, it was not as a series, but as a diptych that Rebel Moon was finally released.
But this evolution of the project proved necessary to preserve Zack Snyder’s artistic vision, especially since each of the two feature films will be presented in two different versions: a public edit and a director’s cut that offers approximately 60 minutes of extra footage!
The first part of Rebel Moon is titled child of fire It will be released exclusively on Netflix on December 22; The second part of L’Entailuse will be available from April 19, 2024. Recall that the films follow a battle led by mercenaries hired by a peaceful colony against a bloodthirsty invader.
