Defense Minister of Ukraine presents letter of resignation

Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said on Monday that he had submitted his letter of resignation to the speaker of parliament, representing the biggest change to the defense system since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced Sunday evening that he had decided to replace his wartime defense minister and proposed Rustem Umerov, a Crimean Tatar who heads the State Property Fund, as his replacement.

In his resignation letter, Reznikov gave an overview of his 22 months in office, praising Ukraine’s fierce resistance during the war against Russian forces and his ministry’s efforts to secure vital military aid from the West.

“More than 50% of the territories temporarily occupied by Russia have already been liberated. Every day our defenders are advancing,” he said in the letter posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“There is an understanding that Ukraine is the shield of Europe in the east.”

Reznikov, who has been touted as Ukraine’s next possible ambassador to London, said he considered it one of Kiev’s top priorities to build long-term partnerships with key allies and obtain “real security guarantees”.

Rezhnikov’s ministry had to deal with wartime scandals involving food and clothing procurement, as well as allegations by some military aid NGOs that the bureaucracy had not been cut down quickly enough. Reznikov denies any wrongdoing.

He said in his resignation letter that the defense procurement and procurement processes had been reformed during his tenure and that he had fulfilled all the duties assigned to him when he was appointed 22 months ago.
