The Brazilian team ended the first day of clashes against Denmark, in Group I of the Davis Cup world championship, with a success rate of 100%. This Friday (15th), in Denmark, the Brazilians secured 2-0 with the victory of Thiago Monteiro (number 116 in the ATP ranking) against Holger Rune (number 4) by 3 sets to 1. Then, Thiago Wild (no. 76) beat August Holmgren by 2 sets to 0.
Opening the clash this Friday, Thiago Monteiro faced the young Holger Rune and did not let his opponent’s favoritism enter the field. In almost three hours of play, the Ceará native took the first two sets to a tie-break and beat the world number 4, 6/7, 7/6 and 6/2.
After the victory, the tennis player dedicated the victory to the team. “I am very happy to give this first point to Team Brazil. It is a special victory for me, even more so because it was a really tough match. Holger (Rune) is an incredible player and I tried to do my best. I expressed my heart on the court, I got to the third set very physically and managed to make the difference”, he declared.

Then, Thiago Wild played against August Holmgren and showed superiority throughout the match. Paranáse fell behind in the rankings only three times during the match and won in two consecutive sets, with scores of 6/4 and 6/2.
Wild said he was happy to get his first Davis Cup win. “I am very happy with my performance, especially because it is my first in Davis, which makes it even more special. I felt completely motivated by Monteiro’s victory and it gave me more strength on the court, it was an incredible energy. Now we are Tomorrow we will look for the third point to define the comparison”, he declared.
With this lead, Team Brasil is just one more win away from securing a place in the next stage of the Davis Cup. Despite the good results, Jaime Oncins, captain of Team Brasil, explained that nothing is definitive in the comparison.
“Of course it’s important to go out with a 2-0, but we haven’t won anything here yet. We’ve already talked a bit about staying focused and we don’t know what the Danish team will do with the pair. It could be that they change. So we have to worry a lot of our preparation,” he said.
The doubles match will open the program this Saturday (16th), starting at 7 am (Brasilia time). Rafael Matos and Felipe Meligeni face the duo Johannes Ingildsen/Christian Sigsgaard.
So, the Thiagos return to court. Wild duels with Rune, while Monteiro plays with Holmgren. All matches will be broadcast live CBT TVchannel of the Brazilian Tennis Confederation on Youtube.
