In One Piece, the young monkey d. Luffy (Inaki Godoi) sets off in search of the titular legendary treasure to become the Pirate King. However, the road to glory is strewn with all kinds of failures and dangers. Luffy and his crew have been tested many times and must participate in many battles.
Therefore, filming such an adventure series is not easy for the characters of the show, especially its protagonist, Inaki Godoiwho talked about it in a Teen Vogue video (via FilmStarts ).
When I was shooting underwater, it was pretty crazy. I opened my eyes and the divers were filming me with cameras and I had to play…underwater! Wow, that’s something new! The underwater scene was quite physically demanding because the water was freezing, but it wasn’t the most difficult to shoot…
Indeed, even if this shooting was particularly physically demanding, the 20-year-old found another scene even more difficult, but for a completely different reason…
A defining scene for LUFFY’s character
“I think the hardest scene for me to shoot… I had this scene with Corby on the boat where we talk about his dreams and his intention to join the Navy. In particular, this scene was one of the first scenes I shot. This was a very important scene because Luffy is very interested in dreams, so I knew I had to get it right. This is what fully represents the character.”

So it wasn’t the spectacular action sequences, but the quiet, honest dialogue scenes that posed the biggest problem. Inaki Godoi, a scene that proved he was the perfect actor to portray the beloved character. The scene is, in fact, essential to introducing Luffy, and for Godoy, it was important and therefore particularly difficult to explore the character’s quirks and his different aspects before embarking on an adventure with him.
“This aspect of Luffy is: He is very friendly and kind. He’s not just a ball of energy, he’s a ball of energy that listens“- said the young star. To achieve success, he worked for a long time on stage with the director Mark Jobst and even changed small things to achieve this result. And it won, as the extremely positive reactions to his performance and the quality of the series as a whole now attest.
The first season of One Piece (2023) is available exclusively on Netflix.
