The series Corpo em Chama is the latest addition to the Netflix catalogue, starring Úrsula Corberó and José Manuel Poga, the suspenseful plot follows the harrowing journey of a police officer who is brutally murdered and set on fire. The main suspects in this horrendous crime are the victim’s girlfriend and her lover. But those who saw the series certainly had questions: is the story based on real events or not?
Burning body texture
The plot revolves around the tragic murder of police officer Pedro (played by José Manuel Poga) in 2017. He is cruelly burned in the trunk of his car, and the main suspects in this heinous crime are his girlfriend, Rosa (played by Úrsula Corberó ) and her lover, Albert (played by Quim Gutiérrez). As the investigation develops and becomes public, it turns out that the relationship between these three characters, who were also colleagues at the police station, is full of mystery, lies and violence.
The true story behind the series
The Netflix miniseries is inspired by the shocking case that shook Barcelona in 2017, known as “Crimen de La Guardia Urbana”. The case gained notoriety in the media after the mortal remains of Barcelona’s Guardia Ubrana police officer, Pedro Rodrigues, were found charred in the trunk of his car. At the time it was only possible to identify the policeman’s body thanks to the chassis of the vehicle.
As the investigation into the crime progressed, two main suspects were arrested: Rosa Peral, Pedro’s girlfriend and co-worker, and Albert López, a young man who had a history of involvement with Rosa and, according to rumors, was still having an affair. with her.
The case gained even more notoriety, since during the interrogations, Rosa and Albert made mutual and divergent accusations. While Pedro’s girlfriend claimed that she was forced not to report her lover for breaking into her house and killing her partner, Albert claimed that the police officer was already dead when he arrived home of Rosa.
Still with conflicting speeches. Rosa accused her lover of killing Pedro in an act of sick jealousy, while Albert in turn claimed that Rosa had killed the police officer after Pedro had beaten her. The police in turn concluded that the couple had killed Pedro because they wanted to be together and saw the victim as an obstacle that prevented them from being together.
Despite these conflicting narratives, in 2020 both were convicted by the courts for the murder of Pedro Rodrigues. Rosa Peral was sentenced to 25 years in prison, while Albert López was sentenced to 20 years.
In the Netflix series, only the real names of the 3 characters were kept, while the other characters who appear during the episodes changed their names.
