Previously, Yorgos Lanthimos described Emma Stone’s sex scenes in Poor Creatures as ‘shameless’ and ‘intrinsic part’ of the film
With direction from Yorgos Lanthimos and scheduled for release on February 1, 2024 in Brazilian cinemas, Poor Creatures features sex scenes with Emma Stoneinterpreter of the protagonist, Bella Baxter. In fact, the filmmaker revealed how the actress did not “avoid” filming intimate moments.
During a press conference at New York Film Festival 2023 (via People), Lanthimos cited the positive impact of the way stone handled these scenes in question for the film and the development of filming.
“It was a very important part of his journey. We felt like we shouldn’t shy away from it,” the filmmaker said. “It would be very false to tell this story about this character who is so free and so open, and then be prude about the sexual aspect of it.”
Still without an indicative rating in Brazil, the production, abroad, is only for audiences over 18 years old, because it has “strong and widespread sexual content, graphic nudity, disturbing material, blood and language.”
At another point during the press conference at the event, Yorgos Lanthimos talked about the origin of the sex scenes in Poor Creatures: “It was clear from the beginning, but also in the novel, in the script, in my discussions with Emma and how we came up with these scenes. She needed to be free; There shouldn’t be any judgment.”
Just as she learns about language, human suffering, love, science and politics, just as she should be equally free about sex and anything else
Finally, the director took the opportunity to praise the work of Emma Stonewho was unable to attend the New York Film Festival 2023 due to the actors’ strike Hollywood. “She’s just incredible. The vulnerability and the sensitivity and the humor of it—it’s so hard to do. I just don’t know how she did it,” she said.
