Cavani praises the penalty shootout against Palmeiras at the Allianz: “It has a special flavour”

Boca Juniors eliminated Palmeiras on penalties in the semifinals of the Libertadores and is in the big decider of the tournament. In regulation time of the return match, played at Allianz Parque, Cavani put the Argentinians ahead early and Piquerez left everything the same to take the decision to maximum penalties.

For the Uruguayan, scorer of Boca’s goal, the ranking at the opponent’s home ground and the way in which it arrived has a completely different flavour.

“It has a special flavour, because we play away from home on a difficult pitch. Playing here is something very difficult for any team that comes to play. But we played for moments: for a moment we defended ourselves, because Palmeiras is a very good team, but Boca is Boca and we always have to compete. So we are very happy, because we have achieved an objective and now we have taken a step forward and we will fight and work to achieve the objective in this (final) match”, He said said.

Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero was also the star of the match when he saved shots from Raphael Veiga and Gustavo GĂłmez. Cavani stressed that he has a lot of faith in the veteran in these decision-making moments and took the opportunity to praise the entire team.

“We have a lot of faith in our goalkeeper, in the whole team, because when the team had to respond, they responded, they knew how to suffer and even the big teams know how to suffer. And if they have to arrive that’s fine, they also know how to do it well, resist and resist and that’s what we were today, a great demonstration of character. Now it’s time to regain our strength and focus on what we need for the championship and when the time comes, everything will be as it was today to do that step we’re missing,” he said.

Romero highlighted his teammates after winning his place via Libertadores decision and spoke of how, for him, penalty shootouts are “fun”.

“We work hard, we have people like Hernán Garcia, Leandro Brey (reserve goalkeepers), the group of goalkeepers we have is very important, very good. Great people and that helps a lot when you compete. […] I’m 36 years old and I’m at a point where I like to have fun and, for me, when we go to penalties it’s fun. I’m happy,” she stressed.
