This Sunday, Thiago Monteiro, number 150 in the world, won the title of the challenger tournament in Campinas (SP), a clay court event with a prize pool of 130 thousand dollars.

The native of Ceará beat the Argentine Camilo Ugo, 177th, by 2 sets to 1 with splits of 3/6 6/4 6/4 after 2h52min on João Lima’s center court.

This is the Brazilian’s eighth victory and his first on home soil. He is the second Brazilian to win the tournament, now in its thirteenth edition.

He maintains his streak after beating Holger Rune, ranked fourth in the world, in his biggest career Davis Cup win away from home.

For the trophy, Monteiro will earn a total of 80 points and will be ranked around 125th in the world in the next ranking which will be published next Monday.

From Monday onwards he will play against the challenger again in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and could reach even higher.
