During the Bolsonaro government, these institutions became fundamental channels for the diffusion and institutionalization of anti-gender logic
New representatives of the Guardianship Councils across Brazil were elected by direct vote by the population earlier this month. These institutions are essential to guarantee the protection of children and adolescents in light of the Statute of Children and Adolescents (ECA).
During the four years of former President Jair Bolsonaro’s administration, several academic research – as is the case of the one created by professor Jacqueline Moraes Teixeira – they found how the Councils have become fundamental channels for the diffusion and institutionalization of the anti-gender logic.
In addition to religious extremism, we have seen how anti-gender discourse, based on biological essentialism and committed to the renaturalization of social gender relations, has begun to guide the practices adopted within these bodies. This situation leads progressive social movements to recognize how Protection Councils are, today, crucial spaces for the broader dispute over the grammar of human rights.
What is it like raising a trans child?
In a transnational context of growing persecution of parents of trans children and adolescents, which uses a narrative that even accuses them of “mistreatment” or “child abuse”, the presence of trans people in Guardianship Councils is strategic and necessary.
In addition to joining the ongoing fight in defense of the ECA, against religious racism and in defense of the secular state, trans people elected to the Protection Councils are committed to protecting all childhood and adolescence, understood in their singularities.
