Can we imagine without Barbie? “I’m just Kenny”, a brilliant musical sequence in which Ryan Gosling goes all out? Not Greta Gerwig, but the producers.

In a discussion with Succession creator Jesse Armstrong at London’s BFI, the director and screenwriter revealed that the scene’s existence in the film was questioned during pre-production.

“The script just says, ‘And this becomes a dream ballet and they solve their problems by dancing.’says Greta Gerwig, whose remarks were transcribed variety.

“There was a big meeting where they said, ‘Do you need this?’ And I told him that everything in me needed it. They asked me, “What do you mean? What is dream ballet?” And I said, ‘Dream ballet? Where do we start?'”

Heavily influenced by the musical comedies of Hollywood’s Golden Age, where we find these all-dancing scenes that reflect the themes of the story, Greta Gerwig took the genre monument as a model: Let’s Sing in the Rain, the film. Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen who “Contains Dream Ballet within Dream Ballet”.

Ryan Gosling flexes his muscles and sings a song

“I told myself that if the public could follow Let’s Sing in the Rain, it must be good for us. People should know what we’re talking about. So that was the main clue. And even if everything seemed right to me and filled in. I also happily said To myself, “Oh no, it might be scary, but now I’m committed.”

So needless to say what a relief Greta Gerwig must have been. Not only is Barbie the biggest hit of 2023 worldwide, earning $1.438 billion to date. But the sequence, performed by a fiery Ryan Gosling, asked to perform a song written by Mark Ronson himself, is one of the film’s highlights. And a potential Oscar contender for Best Song.
