Lightyear: Pixar movie banned in Middle Eastern countries for gay kissing

Lightyear was banned in the UAE, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia as Disney declined to make the cuts in the films.

The film follows Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), West Side Story (2021) and eternal (2021) on a growing list of major Disney titles to be blocked by due to the inclusion of LGBTQ+ scenes, which often conflict due to homosexuality being officially illegal throughout the region.

Originally, Disney had asked animators for the Pixar cut the lesbian kiss from the movie. However, following a statement from studio officials claiming Disney was censoring “openly gay affection”, the request was withdrawn and the scene stayed in the final version.

During the screening of the films to the world’s production companies, Pixar would not even have shown lightyear to Saudi Arabia’s censors, knowing it would not pass uncut. In the Emirates, the film was originally released for screening, but the government reversed its decision after protests by religious groups on social media.

In Lightyear, the character Alisha Hawthorne (Use Fertilizer) is portrayed as a homosexual, and his romance with his wife is an important part of the protagonist’s plot and motivation. buzz (Chris Evans) to set off on your perilous mission into outer space.
