Chicken on the wall, pecking… a record that goes on! Since its release in 2000, Peter Lord and Nick Park’s Chicken Run, a stop-motion animated adventure comedy and the first feature from Aardman Animations (in partnership with DreamWorks Animation), has established itself as the coolest chicken movie of all time. But he also maintained an impressive record.

Set in 1950s Yorkshire, England, the story follows the peaceful life of a hen at Tweed Farm. The food is plentiful and the place is warm. All the tenants seem to like the farm, except Ginger the Chicken, who is far from sharing her sisters’ opinion as she dreams of wide spaces and freedom.
It has become a bit of an obsession and every day he tries unsuccessfully to escape from the barn. But Ginger is brave, and she uses her patience to make her volatile friends realize that the fence isn’t around the farm, it’s in their heads.
She regains hope when Rocky Rhodes, a free and lonely American cockerel, walks into the barn. For Ginger, Rocky is the savior of all chickens.
If he had taught them to fly, they would have been able to escape. An essential escape to avoid the inevitable, because Mr. Tweedy, the owner of the farm, has decided to put everyone in the frying pan one day or another.
To tell this remarkable story of freedom and emancipation, the producers have chosen the voices of Julia Savalha, Mel Gibson, Tony Haygarty, Miranda Richardson, Phil Daniels, Lynn Ferguson, Timothy Spall, Imelda Staunton (soon to return to the camera for the final season of The Crown) and Benjamin Whiterow for this wretched garden.
Critically acclaimed, Chicken Run was also an incredible commercial success, grossing over $227 million. As evidenced by the site Numbers – a film industry data website that tracks box office receipts – Chicken Run became the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film in history and DreamWorks Animation’s biggest hit until Shrek, in 2001, doubled that number.
But it remains the first in the stop-motion animated film category and has been for 23 years!
So it’s time to take a look at this little gem, which arrives in the Netflix catalog today, while we wait for its sequel called Chicken Run: The Nuggets Menace, which will come straight to the platform on December 15, 2023.
Our beloved playdough chickens will face a new threat. Finally free, Ginger and Rocky spend peaceful days on an island, far from the dangers of the human world. They even gave birth to a small mole.
Except that the rest of the chickens on the continent are facing a new and dire threat. This time, Ginger and her team don’t hesitate to risk their hard-won freedom to break into a dangerous castle!
