Recently launched, the SotaQuiz website is an interactive quiz to assess users’ knowledge of different Brazilian accents. The challenge comes in the form of 27 audios spoken by people from each state in Brazil. After hearing a standard sentence, you need to mark on a board where the person is speaking from.
But, in order not to make the task easier, there is no type of slang or local expressions present in the speeches. The sentence is unique to all speakers and the clues are only in the pronunciation of some letters, intonation and speed of speech, which presumably gives a small advantage to those who understand phonetics.
“Would you be able to recognize these different Brazilian accents?”, asks the narrator of the video BlaBlaLab, responsible for the communication experiment on social media. The phrase read in all recordings is: “Can you guess what state I’m from? Here’s a car, a battery, a lighter, a frying pan, a soap, a paint, a door and a doorbell”.
What is the goal of the SotaQuiz project?
In principle, SotaQuiz exists, because “Brazil is much bigger than an axis, a state or an accent. It has different linguistic variations depending on the region, the city and sometimes even the neighborhood,” the site description reads.
In addition to being a challenge to learn our language, the BlaBlaLab project is also an invitation to do so embrace all “our ways, things, trains of all Brazil”. Although it is constantly transforming and changing depending on the environment in which it is inserted, the language “is alive”, we read on the site.
In this sense, knowledge of these regional accents constitutes an important link between the primordial language and states of linguistic evolution. Although there is already an attempt to create a neutral accentthis is nothing more than an attempt to create a television language for newspapers and soap operas, says the BlaBlaLab video on social media.
Brazilian Portuguese and its multiple accents
In an effort to resist the subjugation of Brazilian Portuguese to the form spoken in the southeast of the country, SotaQuiz’s presentation video highlights the importance of Brazilian Linguistic Atlas Project (ALiB) which respects the multi-dialect character of our language and provides that the plurality of its use is brought into school classrooms, as a form of training in citizenship and respect for diversity.
About this, Dialectology, study of regional linguistic variations and basis for the creation of the quiz, plays a fundamental role, since it is not limited to geographical variations of multiple accents, as if they were regional dialects, but focuses mainly on social variations, contributing to the reduction of linguistic stigmas and prejudices.
To face this challenge, simply enter the SotaQuiz site and click “Start”. Happy linguistic expedition!
