‘They didn’t explain why they were doing it’: Here’s how Gladiator 2 will use AI on real people


The film scheduled for 2024 is not the first Ridley Scott production to use this method.

The reality of the acting world is starting to look a lot like an episode of Black mirror. It may be that when actors talk about the dangers of artificial intelligence, some smile, thinking that it is no big deal and that they are exaggerating, but the reality is that, just before the strike, productions as large as Gladiator 2 they were already scanning the actors to place them here or there. And it’s not the first time this has happened.

Production directed by Ridley Scottwho was filming in Malta when it was interrupted by the SAG strike, featured extras being scanned between takes in a booth full of cameras, as revealed by Malta Times.

“If they have your face, you don’t know if it’s going to end up in a trailer or a movie or a video,” lamented one extra who didn’t feel he had a chance to refuse. Perhaps this is why the producers proposed that SAG ask, as if that wasn’t enough, the actors’ permission to scan them: they weren’t willing to do it.
