The study shows that after the pandemic, the wages of the richest decreased and those of the poorest increased

The study by economist Daniel Duque, of FGV, shows that, even if slightly, the Brazilian market has become less unequal

The average salary of the poorest segment of the population increased by 15.4% after the pandemic compared to 2019. As regards the richest, the situation was reversed, with a real drop of 0.6% in the average salary of this band. The study that underlines how the Brazilian market has become less unequal in recent years is by the economist Daniel Duque, of the Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), which the newspaper The globe had access.

“During the pandemic there has been a very significant reduction in the lower-skilled workforce. Upon recovery, the lack of workers in some sectors ended up causing wage pressures. As a result, there has been an improvement in the distribution of labor income, increasing wages in the lower income groups,” Duque explained to the newspaper.

In the group of those who earn less, the average salary was R$623.80 in 2019, increased to R$650.70 in 2022 and is now equal to R$730.50. Meanwhile, the average salary of the richest was R$7,336.50 in 2019, reduced to R$6,923.10 in 2022 and is now equal to R$7,286.

For the economist, even if the salary value of the richest increases again this year, the value still remains much lower than that recorded at the ‘base of the pyramid’.

Assessing by level of education, in the last 12 months there has been an increase in the average salary for the admission of illiterates (1%), with up to the 5th year incomplete (3%), 5th year completed (2.9% ), 6th to 9th grade of primary school (2.4%), complete primary school (1.6%), incomplete secondary education (0.7%), and complete secondary education (1.7%).

For people with incomplete higher education (-2.5%), completed higher education (-4%), master’s degree (-4.2%), doctorate (-0.7%) and completed postgraduate studies (- 5.4%) there was a reduction in the average hiring salary.
