The association launches a petition to ask for the extension of Microsoft support for the Windows 10 operating system beyond the established deadline of October 2025
A petition filed by the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) calls for the Microsoft extending support for Windows 10 beyond the established deadline of October 2025. The document, titled “Don’t leave millions of computers behind”, is addressed to the company’s CEO Satyn Nadella and highlights the environmental impact this decision could cause.
- It is no longer possible to upgrade Windows 7 and 8 to Windows 11 for free

The text suggests that ending support for Windows 10 could cause the largest computer disposal in history and prevent Microsoft from meeting its sustainability goals.
“All software reaches the point where it no longer finds consensus, but when the consequences for our environment are so great, we cannot accept it,” writes the consumer protection association.
Obsolete computers
According to the PIRG letter, approximately 40% of devices currently in use will become obsolete because they do not have the necessary hardware requirements to update to the new version of the operating system.

One of the conditions for installing Windows 11 is the need to have a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) 2.0 chip, which already prevents the operating system from running on slightly older machines.
This requirement also explains the slow adoption of Microsoft’s new operating system. October data reveals that Windows 10 still leads the way among installed versions of the operating system, present on 70% of computers, while Windows 11 represents just over 25%.
End of support for Windows 10
End of support puts an end to operating system security updates and leaves PCs more vulnerable to attacks. This means that computers may become unusable and their use is no longer recommended to perform basic tasks.
The deadline given to Windows 10 falls within the standard of approximately 10 years of support offered by Microsoft. However, the most popular versions of the operating system, such as Windows 7: Got extended support to serve consumers.
PIRG’s petition appeals to these same public interest rights and criticizes the end of support as an action that is “unfair to customers who expect their expensive devices to last.”
