Rooney and his alcohol problems: ‘He drank until he passed out’

Birmingham manager and Manchester United idol, Wayne Rooney has given an interview in which he admits to serious alcohol problems at the beginning of his career. According to the former player, the addiction left him depressed and ashamed.

“When I was 20 I spent my days at home, I didn’t go out. I drank until I almost passed out. I didn’t want to be around people because sometimes I felt embarrassed. Other times I felt like I was letting them down,” he said Shrek, speaking to Rob Barrow, former English rugby player.

Rooney also claims that alcohol was a kind of escapism.

“I chose alcohol to help me overcome my problems. I know I could talk to some people, but I decided not to and to deal with it on my own. Luckily now I’m not afraid to go and tell people about my problems,” the former player said.

Developed by Everton (ING), Rooney stood out for Manchester United, a club for which he became the top scorer, with 253 goals in 559 games. He also had an extraordinary time with the England team. As a manager, before Birmingham, he spent time at Derby County (ING), DC United (USA), without the same success as his time as an athlete.
