Jurassic World and Jurassic Park: what is the order to watch the films of the franchise

When we talk about dinosaurs, images from the famous Jurassic Park film series probably come to mind. This Hollywood franchise, one of the most profitable, has its origins in the book “Jurassic Park” by Michael Crichton, published in 1990.

In total, the “Jurassic Park” series includes 6 films. However, the franchise is divided into three films in the classic trilogy, known as the “Jurassic Park Trilogy,” and three films in the Jurassic World trilogy.

Due to the division into two trilogies, and considering that many Hollywood franchises have chronologically fragmented narratives, you may be wondering what the appropriate sequence is for watching the Jurassic Park films. So, read on because we will explain it in more detail.

The chronological order of events in the “Jurassic Park” series is the same as the release order of the films.

Simply watch the films in order of release to understand the complete story of the “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World” universe in real time.

Available to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Star+ and Telecine subscribers.

The first in chronological order is the first film released in the “Jurassic Park” series, way back in 1993. Directed by Steven Spielberg, this film was the highest-grossing film of the year.

This is where it all began: billionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) and a team of scientists create a theme park about extinct dinosaurs on the remote island of Nublar. DNA cloning technology was used to bring dinosaurs back to life. However, when the park opens for a preview visit, a security incident allows the dinosaurs to escape from their cages.

The film is based on the 1990 novel of the same name by Michael Crichton and stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum.

Available to Amazon Prime Video, Star+ and Telecine subscribers.

“The Lost World” is the second film in chronological order of events in the series. Also directed by Steven Spielberg, the film is based on the novel “The Lost World” by Crichton, published in 1995.

The story is set four years after the events of the previous film. In the plot, a second dinosaur cloning site is discovered: the island of Sorna. John Hammond (Attenborough) loses control of his company, InGen, to his greedy nephew (Arliss Howard), who wants to explore this new area.

Meanwhile, Hammond asks Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) to join the expedition to promote a policy of non-interference. When they get there, they discover that dinosaurs are living and breeding freely in the wild. However, InGen plans to capture a Tyrannosaurus rex for display at a San Diego zoo.

The cast also includes Julianne Moore, Pete Postlethwaite, Vince Vaughn, Vanessa Lee Chester and Peter Stormare.

Available to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Star+ and Telecine subscribers.

Following the events of the previous two films, “Jurassic Park 3” is the third in the entire franchise’s timeline and concludes the original trilogy. The film is directed by Joe Johnston and features Sam Neill and Laura Dern reprising their roles. The cast also includes William H. Macy and Téa Leoni.

In the plot, paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant (Neill) struggles to get funding for his research into Velociraptor intelligence. However, he receives an offer from an apparently wealthy couple: money for his studies in exchange for a flight over the skies of the island of Sorna.

However, Alan is deceived. The plane lands in Sorna and his contractors are not rich, they just induced him to look for his missing son on the island inhabited by dinosaurs.

Available for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Star+ and Globoplay subscribers.

This is the fourth film in the “Jurassic Park” series and marks the beginning of the “Jurassic World” trilogy. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, the film introduces new characters to the series’ universe.

The main cast includes Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson, Omar Sy, BD Wong (reprising his role from the 1993 film “Jurassic Park”) and Irrfan Khan.

The story is set 22 years after the events of “Jurassic Park” (1993) and takes place on Isla Nublar, the same location as the first film, where the original park never opened. Now, for some time, a successful attraction called Jurassic World has been operating on the island, showcasing cloned dinosaurs. However, problems arise when a highly intelligent, genetically engineered dinosaur escapes from its enclosure.

Available for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Star+ and Globoplay subscribers.

The fifth film in the series and the second in the “Jurassic World” trilogy, “Kingdom under Threat”. The film is directed by JA Bayona. The cast returns Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, BD Wong and Jeff Goldblum reprising their roles.

The plot takes place three years after the events of “Jurassic World: The Dinosaur World”. The park has been destroyed, and Isla Nublar faces an imminent volcanic eruption that threatens to wipe out the surviving dinosaurs, who now roam free. Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) are called back to help save the dinosaurs.

Available for Telecinema subscribers.

The final film in the “Jurassic World” chronology and trilogy, “Dominion,” is directed by Colin Trevorrow. Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill, the protagonists of “Jurassic Park” (1993), return together in this film, reprising their roles. Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, BD Wong and Omar Sy are also back.

The story of “Dominion” takes place four years after the events of the previous film. Dinosaurs now live alongside humans.
