Studios modify AI proposal to try to end Hollywood actors’ strike

The rejection by the Hollywood Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) of the final proposal of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents film studios in the United States, to end the industry strike could mean the suspension of negotiations among the actors who left until the beginning of 2024. A hard blow that would prolong a strike that has already lasted for more than 110 days. To avoid this, the studios have now agreed to change the language of the proposals relating to the use of artificial intelligence, one of the main impasses involved in the discussions.

A meeting of the Hollywood Actors Guild is expected in the next few hours to evaluate changes related to artificial intelligence. And, according to information gathered behind the scenes, there is hope that this will be enough to put an end to the category’s strike. The information comes from Omelette.

There are no further details on what is contained in the new proposal. Previously, the studios had already signaled the guarantee that only humans would be credited as authors of the scripts, instead of using artificial intelligence. The union’s fear is that the indiscriminate use of technology will cause layoffs in the sector.
