Almost ten years separate the first and third films in The Protector series. Launched as the final chapter, perhaps the third film will not end the trajectory of the character Robert McCall. But before we find out if The Protector franchise will have a fourth film, let’s remember a little about the timeline of this trilogy.
In 2014, inspired by the series of the same name created in the 1980s, the film Open Wings was released, which introduces us to Robert McCall, played by Denzel Washington, in the role of an employee in a hardware store.
It is only when he meets two friends, Susan and Brian Plummer, that he discovers that he is actually a former Defense Intelligence Agency agent, who ended up faking his own death after a bomb attack years ago.
In 2018 we have the arrival of The Protector 2. Filled with subplots, the film was not as well received as the first. However, some developments were important for the continuity of the story.
After wanting to learn more about a colleague’s alleged suicide, Susan suffers a seizure, which brings a new target for McCall. She then begins an investigative saga to find out who is behind all this.
Also directed by Antoine Fuqua, “The Protector: Final Chapter” arrived in October, with the protagonist now retired and living in a small town in Italy, Altomonte. Everything seems peaceful, until the actions of a local mafia end up reactivating McCall’s murderous, vigilante and far from submissive side.
The Protector: will the franchise with Denzel Washington have a 4th film?
Many fans of the franchise are eager to know: will The Equalizer franchise have a fourth film? In an interview with Weekly entertainmentTime magazine, the director said he believes the third film is the end, but also stressed that, “You never know.”
Although there is no official confirmation, according to Antoine Fuqua, if Denzel Washington was also interested, he would make another feature film. The sequel would only make sense if it also had the American actor as its protagonist.
Apparently, the public reception of “The Equalizer: Final Chapter” will also decide whether or not there will be a fourth film. In other words, the roads are open.
