Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt double since the first Harry Potter film, David Holmes suffered an accident on the set of the film that left him paraplegic
While Harry Potter is one of the most popular and profitable franchises in the history of cinema, not everything is rosy when it comes to the behind the scenes of the saga. The tragedy, which caused many repercussions at the time, occurred during rehearsals for one of the most emblematic final scenes of the series. During the final battle of Hogwarts, in which the wizards face the villain Voldemort and his henchmen, there is a moment when Harry is hit by an explosion and thrown into the air.

David Holmes, who was a gymnast and served as the protagonist since the first film in the series, Harry and the Philosopher’s Stone, was chosen for the scene. While the young man was trying out his movements, however, a problem with the cable that was supposed to pull him made him fall to the ground and, due to the impact of the fall, breaking his neck.
Although he was promptly rescued, according to information recently revealed by the Daily Mail newspaper, Holmes did not faint after the accident and even complained of not feeling his legs. The tragedy, unfortunately, led to the gymnast permanently losing her movements from the waist down, changing her life and career forever.
Since then, even though he stopped acting in front of the camera, David has started to get involved in the projects behind it. In addition to starting his own production company, he created a podcast with Daniel Radcliffe, with whom he is still a personal friend today.
Called Smart stuntsthe podcast series launched in 2020 features interviews with other stuntmen in the industry, helping to demystify the profession, but also showing the challenges they face.

In addition to the recordings of Harry Potter, the friendship between David Holmes and Daniel Radcliffe has truly lasted. Many have become close since the time of the film, the actor and the stuntman have remained great friends and, on a professional level, in addition to a podcast, they have also decided to share the spotlight on documentary David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived.
