Democratic and Republican leaders in the U.S. Senate said Wednesday they could vote later in the day on a bill that would maintain government funding and avoid a partial shutdown.
“No drama, no delays, no government shutdowns. That’s our goal and we hope to have an agreement very soon,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, said on the Senate floor.
Leaders of both parties said they supported a stopgap spending bill that passed the Republican-controlled House of Representatives by a wide bipartisan margin on Tuesday.
The current funding expires at midnight local time on Friday, and both houses of Congress must pass a spending bill and send it to Democratic President Joe Biden for signature before then to avoid disruption.
Republican Sen. John Thune said a vote on the bill later in the day was possible.
“Right now we don’t see anything to suggest we couldn’t process this quickly,” he said.
