Love, Fame and Beauty: “Katie is a true friend of Bill’s,” says Don Diamont

Before playing Bill Spencer on The Bold and the Beautiful, Don Diamont played Brad Carlton on The Young and the Restless. For AlloCiné, the star actor of the world of American soap operas looks back on his career in two iconic series.

AlloCiné: In “Love, Fame and Beauty,” Billy’s heart often bounces between several women, especially Brooke (Kathryn Kelly Lang) and Katie (Heather Tom)… but who is his true soul?

Don Diamont: It’s hard to say, but he’s been through so much with Katie… and she’s also the mother of his child. It brings out the best in him. Today I would say Katie!

Who is his worst enemy in the series?

At this very moment, this is Sheila…

What do you think is Bill’s worst act?

I would say when he slept with Steffy, when he was, it seems, married to Liam, his son. Billy’s feelings for her were sincere, but that in no way excuses his actions. The relationship between him and Steffy was born long before Liam appeared on the show and they shared a real bond, but it’s unforgivable!

What other story surprised you?

The plot where Liam wanted to take the company away from Bill was crucial! The one where Kate had post-partum depression was great because it paved the way for Bill to be with Brooke… there was also a story “Who shot Bill?“Which was great.

Tell us about your first day on the set of The Bold and the Beautiful…

I felt the pressure because there isn’t much room for a new hero on The Bold and the Beautiful! Now, I fell in love with Bill the minute I discovered him… My first day was with Suzanne Flannery and I was thrilled. I respect him a lot. Her character Stephanie was very strong and this encounter gave Bill an equal player. We could see it clearly on their stage.

From the beginning, it was important to shape Bill in this way. It was crucial to understand that he was not to be underestimated and that he was completely different from the other characters in the series. It was an exciting day where we laid the foundation for the formation of the Spencer clan.

Do you plan to stay on the show for a long time?

You will see! (Laughs) It’s not up to me… I love playing Bill, so if the production and the writers want to keep me, I’ll stay. It is a difficult character, a character of a lifetime! I know actors say this all the time, but it’s true… I’m crazy about her role and I’m bored when nothing happens.

You previously played Brad Carlton on The Young and the Restless. Do you miss playing this character?

There is no way! I could have had that feeling if I hadn’t had the opportunity to play Bill…

Was Brady’s death a creative decision or a request on your part?

It was a decision made by the executive producer/writer at the time. I was nervous because this job was my livelihood firstly and secondly because I had been playing Brad for almost 25 years!

He hit me without warning, without excuse. At the time, I was disappointed and angry, but somehow confident about the future. It was the best thing that ever happened to me because after a while Bill showed up!

Finally, who do you prefer: Brad from The Young and the Restless or Billie from The Bold and the Beautiful?

Bill, of course!
