Beau’s Afraid is the third and most recent film from director Ari Aster, known for the horror hits Midsommar: Evil Doesn’t Wait for Night and Hereditary. The film, which premiered in April, can be seen on Amazon Prime Video, as well as rented on Apple TV+, Claro TV+ and Google Play Filmes.

Produced by the already famous A24, the work stars Joaquin Phoenix (Joker), and mixes drama, horror and absurd comedy, with a timid performance in cinemas around the world, grossing 11 million dollars at the box office.

Cast and crew

OR launch Beau’s Afraid features Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role of Beau, as well as Amy Ryan (Only Murders in the Building) as Grace, Nathan Lane (Modern Family) as Roger, Kylie Rogers (Yellowstone) as Dr. Cohen and Stephen McKinley Henderson (Dune) as Beau’s therapist.

Besides them, there are Armen Nahapetian (Here and Now) and Zoe Lister-Jones (A Good Person), who play the younger versions of Beau and Mona.

Plot

Beau Wassermann (Phoenix) lives in a completely chaotic neighborhood, as a peaceful man suffering from anxiety. Beau doesn’t have the habit of leaving the house because he is afraid of the neighborhood, full of beggars, murderers, prostitutes and drug addicts.

However, when his mother, wealthy businesswoman Mona (Patti LuPone), insists that he visit her, Beau must face his personal fears to find her. The journey, however, becomes very difficult, as a series of absurdities lead him away from his path.
