When asked about the biggest challenge to interpreting Elvis, Jacob stated that he embodied “The King” as “a man who was suffering”:
I didn’t want to do him the disservice of playing “The King” that the world had done, because that’s what hurt him so much. It was my job not to play on his fame, but to play him as a victim of it — to play him as a man who was suffering. Because with great figures, we never think of them suffering. In the photos, you can see a little if you look closely. We act like it’s okay that he died like that, but he’s not. A little boy died. The weight of that stayed with me. I never wanted to sway my hips, curl my lips, smile and be sexy, because the way Priscilla What you see is that of a man who is suffering. And she loves this man.
Sofia Coppoladirector of the feature film, admitted that she tried not to portray Elvis like a villain. In conversation with Richard Curtis, at BFI Southbank, she reflected on the scene in which Priscilla discovers an alleged betrayal: “I really tried not to make everything black and white. I really tried not to make him the villain.”
“But that scene was the hardest, it was very difficult to do that. We only did a few takes. I couldn’t see her being treated that cruelly. But it’s a love story for her and it had a lot of ups and downs, so I tried to balance it so that it had emotional moments and dark moments.”
