The French animated production “Little Nicholas – Happy As Can Be” won the Cristal Award for best film at the Annecy Film Festival, considered the Cannes of animation.
Directed by Benjamin Massoubre and Amandine Fredon, the film is an adaptation of the stories created by writer René Goscinny (co-creator of the Asterix comics) and illustrator Jean-Jacques Sempé in 1959. Beloved by the French, the adventure “Little Nicholas” “, a boy of about seven, has sold around 15 million books worldwide and recently started two successful live-action films.
The winners of Annecy often compete for the Oscar for best animation, as happened with “Flee” last year and also with the French “Perdi Meu Corpo” in 2019 – which, by the way, was edited by Massoubre. Two years after winning in Annecy, Alê Abreu’s “O Menino eo Mundo” also became the first Brazilian animated film nominated for an Oscar – in 2016.
The design of “Le Petit Nicolas” (the original name of the character) will be released in France in October and does not yet have a preview date in other countries.
Adored by stop-motion fans in Annecy, “No Dogs or Italians Allowed”, directed by French colleague Alain Ughetto and based on the struggles of his grandfather, an Italian immigrant, won the Jury Prize, while “My Love Affair With Marriage” , by Signe Baumane, about a woman under gender pressure, received jury recognition and the ambitious artistic “Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman” – which mixes rotoscoping, 2D and 3D – received a jury mention for Pierre Földes , famous composer on his directorial debut.
