Because Globo has experienced one of its worst years and enters 2024 with uncertainty

The station is frustrated by the lack of bold programming and faces the brunt of increasingly diverse competition

When she had a bad year on the throne, Queen Elizabeth used the Latin expression ‘annus horribilis’ (terrible year) to describe the period. It serves to classify what 2023 was like in Globo’s television drama.

Only two productions can be considered a success: the 7pm soap opera ‘Vai na Fé’ and the Globoplay soap opera ‘Todas as Flores’, broadcast at 10.30pm. Even so, they did not perform particularly well in Ibope. The biggest success was the impact on the Internet.

Coming from last year, ‘Travessia’ ended without managing to conquer the 9pm audience. The successor, ‘Land and Passion’, went through countless changes until it reached its goal of averaging 30 points in one show. It happened in chapter 187, already in its final stretch.

At 7pm, ‘Fuzuê’ made a significant part of the spectators flee, as did the remake at 6pm, ‘Elas por Elas’, which replaced a production that went unnoticed, ‘Amor Perfeito’.

In another important department, that of reality TV, Globo also suffered like never before. Its main product, ‘Big Brother Brasil 23’, ended with the worst audience average since the first edition, 19 points (compared to the positive record of 47 for ‘BBB5’).

Programs with unsatisfactory results, such as ‘No Limite’ and ‘The Voice Brasil’, will be removed from the schedule. Although reformulated, ‘Pipoca da Ivete’ continued to suffer rejections. The talent show “My mother cooks better than yours” was not popular.

‘Mais Você’, starring Ana Maria Braga, has been stagnant for years. The meeting with Patricia Poeta aroused media interest when there was the presenter’s controversy with Manoel Soares. After his dismissal, the attraction cooled.

Even a previously highly rated program, ‘Caldeirão’ with Marcos Mion, came under criticism for its content and had to make changes.

In an event dedicated to the advertising market, Globo presented only one big news for 2024: the musical reality show ‘Estrela da Casa’, promised for the second half of the year.

A better phase is expected on the channel’s Ibope from January onwards, with the debut of ‘Renascer’ remake and ‘BBB24’ bringing new dynamics to the format.

The Rio broadcaster suffers from a lack of boldness and creativity in its programming, while pay channels and streaming platforms try to surprise subscribers with creative productions.

One of the hits of the year was the reality show “Ilhados com a Sogra”, hosted by Fernanda Souza on Netflix. She hasn’t reinvented the wheel, however, she has offered freshness in the segment. Even “A Fazenda 15” offered more entertainment than most Globo programs in 2023.
