Voted best individual coach by the COB, Camila Ferezin is thrilled with the recognition and projects a medal in Paris 2024

Camila Ferezin received the trophy for best individual technique at the Brazil Olímpico Awards, held this Friday in Rio de Janeiro. The coach is largely responsible for the leap in quality made by rhythmic gymnastics in recent years. The sport, which won eight gold medals at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, appears as a possible new source of success at the Paris Olympics, largely thanks to the work led by the former athlete.

This year, the Brazilian rhythmic gymnastics team came very close to finishing on the podium at the sport’s World Cup. The yellow-greens finished in fourth place after drawing with Italy, but were worse in the play-off criteria: the Brazilian girls were penalized with 0.05 for an error made during the presentation.

In Santiago, Brazil won all possible gold medals in rhythmic gymnastics. The group won the overall competition, the five hoops competition, the mixed three ribbons competition and the two balls competition. In the individual competition, Bárbara Domingos won gold in the all-around, ball and ribbon. Maria Eduarda Alexandre, chosen as the new athlete at the Olympic Awards of Brazil, climbed to the highest place on the podium with the hoop and clubs. Besides them, Geovanna Santos, known as Jojo, won silver in the ball competition.

“Going to Peru, to the Pan, we cried, we were very sad, but we knew that it was a construction site, a work of ants. In the last cycle, our gymnasts were just starting out, they were the youngest team there in Tokyo. In this cycle we are reaping the fruits of the work that was planted there. Today they have more experience, they are among the best. We fought to be finalists, today we are on the podium”, said Camila Ferezin.

The 46-year-old coach now wants more. Closely following the evolution of rhythmic gymnastics in Brazil, which today is among the leading countries in this sport, Camila Ferezin is confident that her team can truly achieve an unprecedented feat: getting on an Olympic podium.

“Our goal at the Paris Olympic Games is to win a medal. We know it is possible, we are fighting. We will do thorough work in pursuit of this medal. I am sure that the unprecedented result will come. It is our chance, our opportunity We have a lot of confidence that we will achieve an unprecedented result for our country in 2024,” he commented.

And there is no better time for this leap from Brazilian rhythmic gymnastics to the international level. In 2025, Brazil will host the World Cup and Camila Ferezin has something very clear in mind: to continue writing history and further elevate the sport through good results in major competitions.

“Secondly, our dream, which we started working on yesterday, is the world championship in 2025 in Brazil. It will be the first time that there will be a rhythmic gymnastics World Cup in our country. At the World Championships in this year we almost won bronze, we came fourth by a matter of 0.05. I’m sure it will come in 2024 and we will work hard to get it,” he concluded.
