Carolina Markowicz’s feature film was one of the big winners of the 2023 Rio Film Festival.
2023 was a very interesting year for national cinema. And the best film of the year, which arrived in theaters at the end of November: Tolldirected by Carolina Markowicz (Coal) and interpreted Maeve Jinkings. Pedágio follows Suellen (Jinkings), a woman who leads a simple life working as a toll collector, and has a troubled relationship with her son Tiquinho (Kauan Alvarenga).
Suellen realizes that he can use his job as a way to earn extra income, but illegally. She decides to take the risk, because she believes she has a good reason to do so: the money would be used entirely for a very expensive “gay cure” for her son, taught by a well-known foreign pastor.

The feature film was one of the most celebrated at the Rio 2023 Film Festivaltaking home the awards for Best Actress (Maeve Jinkings), Best Actor (Kauã Alvarenga) and Best Supporting Actress (Aline Marta Maia) and Best Art Direction (Vicente Saldanha). Toll was also present at the 47th Sao Paulo International Film Festival and was screened at the Toronto Film Festival.
If you haven’t watched Toll yet, the good news is that there’s still time. The film – which for this journalist was the best of 2023 – is in theaters and really deserves to be seen. OR I love cinema you saw, and you can check out our review here.
