In Rome Pedro Alonso promotes the spin-off of ‘La casa de papel’

The actor who brings Berlin to life recorded a scene at the Trevi Fountain

By Nicoletta Tamberlich – Berlin is back, but in its own bold way. Despite being a morally ambiguous character, the Professor’s brother, with his madness, his elegant tastes, his philosophies and an unexpected mix of hidden weaknesses, is loved by the public.

This is told by the actor who brought it to life, the Galician Pedro Alonso – born in Vigo, Spain, in 1971 – who went to Rome to promote the launch of “Berlin”, a spin-off of the Alex Pina saga, The Casa de Papel, premiering December 29 on Netflix.

Alonso confessed that, if he could go back in time, his dream would be to “act alongside the greatest and most fascinating of actors, Marcello Mastroianni (in Rome he also took a dip in the ‘Dolce Vita’ in the Trevi Fountain, at joy of his fans, in a scene from the next season), while among Italian directors I would like to be directed by Nanni Moretti and Paolo Sorrentino.

Pedro Alonso talks about peaceful love for a partner and travel, but also about energy and meditation, shamanism and a spiritual journey in Mexico in search of energy, passion and creative fever (“I thought I was done with ‘La Casa de Paper ‘. But no, I have a lot to say”).

The series, in eight episodes, follows the most extraordinary robberies of the iconic character played by Pedro Alonso, who returns in the role of the hedonistic and cunning Berlin, leading him to relive his golden years, a period in which he still did not know that he was ill and was not imprisoned in the Spanish Mint.

At his side, still in the capital, is his new gang: Michelle Jenner (Isabel) plays Keila, an electronic engineering genius; Tristán Ulloa (Fariña, Cocaine Coast) plays Damián, a professor and philanthropist consultant from Berlin.

Sitting at the Hassler hotel at the top of Piazza di Spagna, the actor moves, gesticulates, has a slight smile on his lips, so much so that the interlocutor does not understand if he is joking, a bit like the character who gave him great popularity .

But he admits: “I feel privileged, we didn’t know what to expect, everything went well. I’m in a moment of grace in my career, I’ve traveled the world, I’ve met lots of people, we’ve shot eight chapters”, again in Paris, in magical places. I also made a documentary, but that’s another story.”

But what made you accept the spin-off? “Certainly because it’s an interesting role, I like to surprise in my acting, in another series I also played a priest,” she says.

“As for Berlin, he is self-centered, a kind of sociopath, dangerous, then he had this degenerative disease, but in this prelude he doesn’t know it yet. However, there is this sense of family in him, he is a romantic. This series is different, there is more comedy, he has become sentimental. It’s as if we were in an alternative metaverse, in another galaxy, in a different quantum time”, he adds.

“We had to structure Berlin without completely distorting it, but aware that the stylistic key was different. As an actor it was very stimulating. I immediately felt that this character could still offer a lot. It brings a tragic component in a very romantic context.” history. But it’s a series in itself, you can watch it without having seen an episode of La Casa de Papel,” she guarantees.

In the cast, Julio Peña Fernández is Roi, Berlin’s faithful follower; and Joel Sánchez plays Bruce, the gang’s tireless man of action.

Itziar Ituño (La Casa de Papel) and Najwa Nimri (La Casa de Papel) return as police officers Raquel Murillo and Alicia Sierra, respectively.

The eight episodes of the series are directed by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato.

“There are only two things that can turn a bad day into a great day: love and a day of work that makes millions.” Thus begins the story of Berlin’s golden age, when he still didn’t know he was ill and was planning one of his most extraordinary robberies: to make precious jewels worth 44 million euros disappear, thanks to a sort of illusionist’s trick. . .

And to do so he asks for help from “old friends”, with whom he has carried out scams in the past. “Berlin has an organization that is against the professor, it changes its mind every five minutes, it walks a tightrope,” says Alonso.

Damián (Tristán Ulloa), Berlin’s great friend, “by day is an academic specializing in engineering and physics; in his free time, however, he is a criminal mastermind. The perfect person to turn Berlin’s impossible ideas into reality.”
