That’s right, Rebel Moon is available on Netflix. After months of intense promotion by the American giant, Zack Snyder’s space opera hopes to blow up viewership scores around the world. Needless to say, the streaming platform is betting big on this new franchise, paying no less than $116 million. But while it was hoped to become a profitable new SF saga, Rebel Moon could turn out to be something else entirely.
Our thoughts on Rebel Moon!
in the interview handed over to the Empire Last July, the director made a funny discovery: “It’s my film Seven Samurai in space. And I wanted to do one Star Wars initially. I knew that George Lucas was also very inspired by Kurosawa’s films.
But then why didn’t it happen? “Disney’s Takeover of Lucasfilm Just Completed”. There was a window to shoot, but in the end, I didn’t want Star Wars characters. I wanted to do it on my own. And most importantly, I wanted it to be R-Rated. So it wasn’t a play.”
Over a period of almost 10 years and in parallel with the filming of his films, Snyder and his wife finally developed the script, which was originally intended to be a spin-off of the third opus: “I knew it would be difficult to place my film in the Star Wars galaxy. And the more I got into it, the more I realized I didn’t want to do it.”
Rebellion still remains a “cheap” Star Wars as it tells the story of rebels attacking a totalitarian and warlike government. The opening sequence could very well have appeared in Lucas’ Interstellar saga.
Ultimately, Snyder will turn to Netflix. The director previously worked with them on the Army of the Dead remake (as well as the spin-off Army of Thieves) and is currently working on other projects. Thanks to the streaming platform, the Man of Steel director will be able to do what Rebel Moon set out to do: offer an R-Rated version of the director’s over 3 hours long, available later in the year. .
Rebel Moon 2 (expected April 19) and Rebel Moon 3 are already in the pipeline. So we haven’t heard the last of Cora (Sofia Boutella) and her rebel army.
