The United Nations Security Council met this Friday to discuss the situation in Ukraine, and the country’s supporters called for an urgent meeting to discuss drone and missile attacks by Russia, after Moscow launched the largest bombing of the war so far.
Russian airstrikes in Ukraine on Friday killed 31 civilians and wounded more than 160, according to officials, and Poland said a Russian missile would cross its airspace before returning to Ukraine.
After the meeting began at 6 pm (Brasilia time), council members, including the United States, France and the United Kingdom, condemned the attacks on Ukrainian soil.
The attacks are “a desperate and futile attempt by Russia to regain the upper hand” in its war with Ukraine, Britain’s UN ambassador Barbara Woodward told the council. “They won’t succeed.”
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on the social network extensive destruction of civilian infrastructure.” UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned Russian attacks against Ukraine, his spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said in a statement.
“Attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international humanitarian law, are unacceptable and must stop immediately,” Dujarric said.
