Released on Netflix on December 29, Berlin is a new creation from Alex Pina, the father of La Casa de Papel, in collaboration with Esther Martínez Lobato. He takes on the character of Berlin, played with malice by Pedro Alonso, for a mini-series that tells about one of the crazy adventures of this colorful character.
A great romantic forever, Berlin – real name Andres de Fonoloza – goes to Paris with a crack team to carry out a legendary heist: to steal 44 million euros from the lights of the city’s largest auction house.
Set to follow the blockbuster success of La Casa de Papel – which enjoyed a special second life on Netflix after going largely unnoticed on its original channel – Berlin takes advantage of one of the parent series’ most popular characters.
But is this return with fanfare to the liking of early fans? As of this writing, AlloCiné viewers give it an average rating of 2.9 out of 5 based on 214 ratings, including 56 reviews.
Most of the comments coincide with the series being disappointing. “Everything is bad about this spin-off. Nothing coherent, neither in the heists nor in the love stories.– Laurent Gaultier regrets.
“I waited a long time for this and I was at 9:01 this morning (that’s saying something). It’s clearly disappointing, the characters are barely developed, the music isn’t as good as in the main series, the supporting cast is average.“, confides Dr. Popcorn.
But other viewers seem to find what they’re looking for, like Kim Keita: “A good spin-off, sure, it’s not La Casa de Papel, but it’s nice to find Berlin and the atmosphere again.”
There is genuine enthusiasm, as for Lia: “Great fun with this great spin-off of La Casa de Papel. It is light, rhythmic and ingenious. The characters are very cute and well acted.“
