If episode 7 of Kyungsong’s creation left you eager for a sequel, there’s good news: the second installment of the South Korean series will be released on Netflix on Friday, January 5. This second series of episodes contains the final three of the season – 8, 9 and 10.
This strategy of splitting the series into two parts allows the Netflix platform to monitor and generate excitement around the program. This paid off for Kyŏngsŏng’s creation. Within days of its release, this South Korean drama moved into the French ratings of the streaming giant.
Halfway between fantasy, horror and science fiction, this blockbuster follows the nightmare of a group of survivors trapped in Gyeongsong Prison – the former name for the capital city of Seoul – before a tentacled monster.
Beyond its plot, Kyongsong’s creation is inspired by the dark chapter of Korean history under Japanese colonization. Between 1910 and 1945, 7,500 people died at the hands of Japanese forces.
For more than three decades, many of the residents were used as guinea pigs for bacteriological experiments at Unit 731, the military research base that housed his practice and from which the series draws much of its inspiration.
The entire Kyŏngsŏng Creature is available on Netflix.
