‘Most Exciting and Invigorating Season Ever’: US Critics Agree on True Detective’s Return

So much time has passed since the last season of True Detective — and so much more since its 2014 debut — that the prospect of a new season seemed like a distant dream. But the 4th season, called “Night Country”, will definitely come out.

Early fans will be reassured: Issa Lopez, this season’s director and head writer, who took over the reins from Nick Pizzolatto, seems to have lived up to the appointment and expectations. Because the series is about to make a pretty spectacular comeback, judging by the early reviews.

In fact, these early reviews are so positive that the HBO show has already reached 98% Rotten tomatoes.

According to the official synopsis, the fourth installment will follow Jodie Foster and Callie Reyes as cops searching for eight Alaskan scientists who have disappeared without a trace.

unanimous press

While the public still has to wait until Sunday January 14th in the US and Monday January 15th in France, American critics have had a chance to discover Season 4 in its entirety, and they’re 98% positive. Their praise or Rotten Tomatoes. It is believable.

Alan Sepinwall Rolling Stone :”The end result is a six-episode season that keeps Pizzolatto’s time beautiful and leaves out the more self-indulgent or downright awkward parts of those years.

Kristen BaldwinEntertainment Weekly :”There is a kind of magic in Foster’s performance; The actor has so much fun playing this no-nonsense hard worker that he transforms Detective Danvers from a potential cliché to a hypnotic and often hilarious anti-heroine.

Matthew Gilbert The Boston Globe :”The season has a dynamic that pulls you in and pulls you into all kinds of twists and turns, disturbing hints of the supernatural and bordering on dark horizons, so much so that I wanted more than six episodes into the season.

Kelly LawlerUSA Today :”Led by new creator writer-director Issa Lopez, Night Country is every bit as great as the first season ten years ago, and may even surpass it.

Ollie RichardsEmpire magazine :”True Detective has never been better since its triumphant first season; The land of night is a mystery with a thick and sinister atmosphere that gives you chills.

David Bianculi NPR :”True Detective: Night Country is the best entry in this anthology series since the original – and this time, just like the first time, it’s the direction and the atmosphere, as well as the acting and the script.

Hoai-Tran BuiReverse :”The most exciting and refreshing season of the series since the first.

Ben TraversindieWire :”Longtime fans can’t complain about the lack of commitment to what makes True Detective a “true detective.” But the real achievement of season 4 is that it has gone beyond the beginning and created a devilishly subversive detective series that is tense, good and refreshing all at once.

Kate Phipps TV Guide :”The land of the night has nothing to envy of its predecessors. Set in the endless night of an arctic winter, it is dark both literally and figuratively and deals with a crime as shocking as that imagined in previous seasons.

Benji Wilson Daily Telegraph :”Native Alaskan cultures are also discussed, adding to the classic True Detective feeling of being thrown into an environment you don’t understand and don’t want to be there.

Karin James BBC.com :”Lopez took inspiration from True Detective to create a brutal, absorbing and richly imaginative new series.

True Detective: Night Country will be available from Monday 15 January on Prime Video with Warner Pass.
