What are you doing?

Bella is a young woman brought to life by the brilliant and unconventional Dr. Godwin Baxter. Under his protection, he is eager to learn. Eager to discover a world she knows nothing about, she runs into Duncan Wedderburn, a smart and depraved lawyer, and embarks on a dizzying odyssey across continents. Bella, overcome by the prejudices of her time, is determined not to give up on the principles of equality and liberation.

What does the press think?

According to Ecran Large:

At times uncomfortable, often heartbreaking, consistently exhilarating, ‘Poor Creatures’ is as much a treasured cinematic marvel as Emma Stone’s extraordinary performance.” (Alexander Janowiak) 5/5

According to L’Humanité:

“Constant pleasure for the eyes.” (Emilio Meslet) 5/5

According to Les Fiches du Cinéma:

“As a result of a scientific experiment, Bella Baxter has the brain of an infant in the body of a young woman. Yorgos Lanthimos follows her learning about the world, funny and moving. A virtuoso fable, very rightly a Golden Lion winner.” (Michael Genami) 5/5

According to L’Obs:

“It’s okay: in this baroque parable of bourgeois morality and folly, the Golden Lion at the recent Venice Film Festival, there is more wit and madness than 95% of current production. (Nicholas Schaller) 4/5

According to Liberation:

“Yorgos Lanthimos’ film, thanks to brilliant performances by Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo, is a successful risk-taking.” (Laura Thuillier) 4/5

Wretched Creatures: A World Like You’ve Never Seen Before! How the world of Bella, played by Emma Stone, was created

According to aVoir-aLire.com:

“Poor Creatures is simply a continuation, even an achievement, of cinema focused on feminist commitment and fresh perspective. An impressive piece of work.” (Julien Rocher) 4/5

According to IGN France:

“Remarkable in both form and content, Poor Creatures hardly suffers from the lack of control directly tied to its protagonist. But no one controls Bella.” (Ervan Lafleuriel) 4/5

According to the Prime Minister:

“Hilarious, if a little repetitive, this precariously balanced quest for female emancipation owes much to Emma Stone’s extraordinary and hilariously unconvincing performance: we knew she was talented, but we never believed she could also incarnate Balez.” (Francois Leger) 3/5

According to Le Journal du Dimanche:

“Unfortunately, the heroine’s thirst for learning, both sexual and intellectual, turns into a grand Guinolesque farce, not all of which we understand.” (Barbara Teat) 2/5

According to Le Figaro:

“The dubious aesthetics of the film are exacerbated by Lanthimos’s misuse of a wide angle, or fisheye, which distorts the image. It’s up to the viewer to persevere through the 2 hours and 21 minutes. This disgusting film, in every sense of the word.” (Etienne Sorin) 1/5
