Sunglasses on his nose, headphones in his ears, foot on the accelerator… In 2017, Ansel Elgort (Divergent) headlines Baby Driver, the latest offering from Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim, Hot Fuzz). Here, the actor slips into the shoes of a terrifyingly talented driver, except he uses that gift to benefit a gang of thugs. And as he tries to escape, he’s stalked by a dangerous criminal (Kevin Spacey).
With Baby Driver, it’s Wright’s dream come true. Since the age of 21, when he discovered singing Bellbottoms John Spencer Blues Blast author, he dreamed of filming a car chase on this track. And that’s what he does, from the opening scene of his film (and what a scene!)
“Everything is actually on time and in sync”
While being chased by the police, Baby manages to drive his car brilliantly. A sequence that gave the teams a hard time, and especially Ryan Heffington, who is responsible for choreography:
“It’s a scene shot in a single shot in which Baby walks three blocks through the heart of the city. Every passerby, waiter, child or dog he meets is precisely choreographed. It’s a kind of alternate reality where everything looks real, but everything is. Real time and synchronized”.

This beautiful action scene sets the tone for the rest of the film, which combines action and music so that the rhythm of the chosen title matches the rhythm of the scene shown on screen. To best prepare the actors, the director gave them the script on iPads, which contained small emoticons in the colors of the film, which they could click on to hear the music accompanying the scenes.
With an international box office haul of $227 million on a small budget of $34 million, Baby Driver is Edgar Wright’s highest-grossing film. Since then, the director has written the script for the second part, but he does not know when it will be shot…
Baby Driver, which also stars Lily James, Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx, leaves the Netflix catalog on January 28.
