The ship sinks in the bay of Todos-os-Santos; The Navy searches for missing persons

After being called, a search and rescue team from the Bahia Port Authority (CPBA) was sent to the scene to conduct the search.

At least five people died after a boat sank on Sunday night (21), in the city of Madre de Deus, metropolitan region of Salvador (BA). According to information from the Brazilian Navy, the victims are four adults and one child.

The boat was traveling from Maria Guarda Island (in Todos-os-Santos Bay) to the municipality, located in a tourist region that sees high traffic at this time of year. The sinking occurred around 10pm, while the passengers were returning from a party.

Witnesses said the vessel, which has capacity for 10 people, was full. The total number of people present is not yet known.

According to witnesses, any discussion between passengers would have created confusion. The passengers apparently fled to one side of the boat, which ended up capsizing due to the uneven distribution of the total weight.

Six other people were taken to the Madre Deus municipal hospital; two of them have already been discharged, three have been taken to Salvador and one is awaiting transfer to a health facility also in the capital.

The injured victims are: a six-year-old boy hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit of the Roberto Santos Hospital, in Salvador; a 1-year-old girl hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit of the Hospital do Subúrbio, in Salvador; and a 56-year-old woman hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Municipal Hospital of Salvador.

After being called, a search and rescue (SAR) team from the Bahia Port Authority (CPBA) was sent to the scene to search for the possibly missing person, together with other agencies, as well as investigating the incident and gathering information.

A ship from the Environmental Protection Police Company (COPPA) of the Military Police, an aircraft from the Air Group (Graer) and other civilian ships are participating in the searches.
