The victim was under investigation by the Special Action Group for the Repression of Organized Crime (Gaeco) of the Rio Public Prosecutor’s Office, for possible participation in the militia war in Sepetiba.

The dispute would be territorial, against Rui Paulo Gonçalves Estevão, known as Pipito, right-hand man of the militiaman Luís Antônio da Silva Braga, known as Zinho, arrested on December 24, after having surrendered to the Federal Police. As the report points out, whoever succeeds Zinho will control the annual income estimated by the police to be around R$120 million.

The militiamen’s “income” comes from the exploitation of illegal activities in the region, such as extortion and the clandestine sale of cable television signals, as well as security and tolls to allow vans to travel in the area. Zinho had 12 arrest warrants issued in his name.

The man appointed as successor to the militiaman Zinho, Antônio Carlos dos Santos Pinto, known as Pit, was shot dead in a community in Rio de Janeiro on the 29th. In addition to him, three other men were also found dead. Authorities speculate that the motivation for the killing was dispute over control of militias in the region, as Zinho left no successor before handing himself over to police.
