Disney announces an end to password sharing in the United States

Disney echoes Netflix and will begin banning password sharing on its streaming services in the United States.

The measure had already been implemented in Canada at the end of last year and, according to CEO Bob Iger, is expected to be extended to the rest of the world in 2024.

The announcement to the Americans was made via email. Last Wednesday (31st) Hulu subscribers received a statement saying that the company will begin “adding limitations to sharing your account outside of your home” starting March 14th.

In addition to Hulu, Disney also has the streaming platforms Disney+ and ESPN+.

The new user agreement makes the change clear:

“You agree not to impersonate or misrepresent your affiliation with any person or entity, including by using another person’s username, password or other account information, or another person’s name or likeness, or providing false details of a parent or guardian.”

User agreements state that the company can review user accounts to ensure they comply with password sharing rules.

Violators of the terms may have their accounts limited or terminated.

In the footsteps of Netflix

And what about Brazil?

There is no specific and confirmed information yet on Disney platforms here in Brazil.

The change, however, is certain: we just don’t know the exact date yet. We can safely say this based on the latest statements from Disney CEO Bob Iger.

In August last year he said that the company intends to solve the problem of password sharing by the end of 2024.

“We’ve definitely established that as a real priority. In fact, we believe there is an opportunity here to help us grow our business.”Iger said on his third-quarter 2023 earnings call.

Disney’s next conference call is scheduled for Feb. 7, when Iger is expected to provide new information on the topic.

The information comes from CNN.
