Good news for those nostalgic for Kung Fu, the iconic 70s series that introduced David Carradine to the general public! According to the information DeadlineUniversal Pictures has started a film adaptation project with Donnie Yen in the iconic role of Kwai Chang Kane. Ed Spielman, creator of the original television series, will executive produce.
This feature film is directed by David Leitch, director of John Wick and Deadpool 2. A specialist in action, the filmmaker will return on May 1, 2024 with another adaptation of the memorable series: The Fall Guy.
The little beetle is back!
To recall, Kung Fu followed the adventures of a Shaolin monk, Kwai Chang Kane, nicknamed Little Beetle. Born to an American father and a Chinese mother, the latter is on the run after killing the nephew of the Chinese emperor, who himself killed the hero’s master. He then finds refuge in the United States to escape reprisals from the Chinese and sets off in search of his half-brother Danny.
Traveling alone on foot in the American West, Kane works occasionally to survive. His atypical appearance and the fact that a price was placed on his head often made him a victim of desperation and thugs. Against them, he has only one weapon: his martial arts skills. Note that the series has 63 episodes spread over 3 seasons (1972-1975).
Donnie Yen
A legend of action cinema
“Donnie Yen is both an extremely talented actor and a legend of action cinema. It’s a privilege to have a true martial artist at the helm of this massive film. It will be a pleasure to work with him, our creative partners and Universal. Reimagine this beloved story on the big screen.”David Leitch said.
Donnie Yen notably fought John Wick himself in Episode 4 of the saga. The 60-year-old actor is still in great shape, capable of extraordinary sports. The latter recently shone in part 4 of the Ip Man saga and showed off his fighting skills in Sakra, which hit theaters on May 10, 2023.
Additionally, Donnie Yen has been a regular in American blockbusters for over 20 years. We could see him in Highlander Endgame, Blade 2 or Star Wars Rogue One. As for Kung Fu, the release date is still unknown. You’ll have to be a bit patient before you learn more about the project.
