5 years after Game of Thrones, Maisie Williams is unrecognizable in her new series

Amazing performance. In The New Look, Apple TV+’s new prestige series about the World War II rivalry between Christian Dior and Coco Chanel, we barely recognize Maisie Williams, who plays Catherine Dior, the famous fashion designer’s sister.

In 1941, Catherine Dior joined the resistance and was part of a secret network that gathered vital intelligence for the Allied forces. He risks his life every day to deliver these messages by cycling through the streets of Paris.

Arrested by the Germans in 1944, he was deported to Ravensbruck, a Nazi concentration camp north of Berlin, after being tortured by the Gestapo.

He lost 11 kilos

In order to interpret Catherine as closely as possible, Maisie Williams lost a little more than 11 kg by following a diet carefully monitored by health professionals. He was monitored with blood tests and heart rate measurements.

In an interview with a British publication Harper’s Bazaar, she explained that she lost the weight before filming The New Look mostly through sweating (a lot!). He also ate very little and meditated regularly.

I had to get up at 4am to start sweating. The day before, about 7 or 8 p.m., I was allowed to eat something salty and comforting—a little smoked salmon and a small glass of wine.

Then I took a hot bath with lots of salt. After that I would lay in bed and sleep for about three hours, then wake up and eat a handful of nuts. At that time I could not sleep all night“.

A real composite role

The Game of Thrones star says he struggled to understand Catherine Dior’s patriotism, which drove him to risk his life.

I didn’t really understand what it meant to be a patriot because I was often disappointed and left out by my country’s behavior.“, Maisie Williams explains. But I was most proud of the 2012 London Olympics.”

The actor got the role in February 2022 and spent the whole year in Paris, where the series was filmed. Becoming Catherine Dior required a lot of research and attention, which allowed her to understand the gravity of what happened during World War II in a way she never had before.

tiring shot

Some of the most challenging scenes include Catherine Dior’s interrogation by the Gestapo in Paris, her journey in cattle cars after her arrest in Germany, and what she endured in a concentration camp. But the actor didn’t care.

It was incessant. The process of acceptance after acceptance is truly a way of finding your character. It’s not for everyone, but I like to lose myself in the role and lie down until we’re done with the scene“.

Despite the dark aspects of Catherine Dior’s story, Maisie Williams says she understood how important it was to focus on the more positive aspects of the story.

When Catherine Dior was released from the RavensbrĂĽck camp, she returned to Paris and eventually settled in Provence, where she began growing roses.

Every day of filming reminded us that we were portraying the horrors that people can inflict on each other, but also magic, hope and love. Ultimately, we wanted to make an inspiring series.”
