What are prequels, sequels and spin-offs?

During the construction of the narrative found in films, series and even books, countless terms end up gaining public repercussions, but not everyone knows what they mean or how they impact the story they are about to consume. With this in mind, we have separated some information to introduce you, in a very simple way, to the concept of prequels, sequels and spin-offs. Find out more information below.

What are they and what are the differences between prequels, sequels and spin-offs?

When we talk about (also broadcast as ‘prequel’ or ‘prelude’), we are referring to a narrative that tells the backstory of a story we have already consumed. For example, if you read a book set in 2024, its prequel tells of events that happened long before the date of this first work.

A great example is the “Hunger Games” trilogy, which tells the story of Katniss Everdeen, who is thrown into an arena with other young people from which only one can get out alive. In the prequel to this universe, entitled “The Song of Birds and Serpents”, we have access to the same games, but in a narrative that takes place 64 years before Katniss’ story.

The prelude to a story can be written for several reasons, such as to build a more elaborate backdrop for the narrative, to explain events happening in the present, and even to give more depth to the world created by the author.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

OR , as the name suggests, is the sequel to an already published work. While the film “The Hunger Games” is the first volume of a trilogy, the second film, entitled “Catching Fire”, is already considered a sequel, as it continues an already told story.

Regardless of the form of publication of the sequel (book, film, series, etc.), it is customary to keep all the characters or at least the most important ones, as well as insert several others and even add new twists. . There is also a plot that integrates what was presented in the first work, but with the aim of adding more depth to the narrative and bringing more details, more history and other narrative focuses.

Already the it is a production derived from another. Those who love wizards and magic will surely know the films and books of the “Harry Potter” saga. Well, any production made that expands the universe of the first films/books is already considered a spin-off, as is the case with the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” films.

Therefore, it can be said with certainty that while the original work establishes concepts, stories, narrative focuses and a complex universe as a whole, the spin-off seems to reuse many (if not all) of these characteristics, but by creating new stories and using new protagonists.
