Disney will leave it up to Sony to sell its physical media

An agreement has been reached that Disney’s DVD and Blu-ray sales will go to Sony, at least in the United States and Canada. The information comes from Bloomberg.

With this, Disney’s physical media will be produced, distributed and sold by Sony. Part of the agreement also ensures that Sony will market, sell and distribute new Disney releases on physical media to consumers through retailers and distributors in the United States and Canada.

As for digital media, they will continue to be managed by Disney itself, such as on-demand services for titles.

The DVD business is in rapid decline

It is not yet clear whether this deal with Sony will lead to cuts to Disney employees. Bloomberg’s sources, however, say that Disney intends to conduct an internal assessment, to understand the position of all of its company’s functions in relation to physical media, during the period in which it transfers these activities to Sony.

Gradually, Disney’s role in selling physical media was already diminishing. Last year, the entertainment giant stopped selling physical discs in some strong markets, such as Australia and New Zealand.

The interruption of this type of activity in an era dominated by digital media contrasts with what was already a very profitable business for Disney in the past, namely the sale of videocassettes and, later, DVDs. the company has already launched it and it is available to subscribers of its streaming service, Disney+.
