The MPB icon has recorded a new version of one of the greatest classics of French music to be part of the soundtrack of a documentary screened at the Berlin International Film Festival
Caetano Veloso released this Friday, the 23rd, a new version of the song La Mer. Written by Carlo Trenet and acclaimed as one of the greatest classics of French music, the song was originally released in late 1945 by the singer Roland Gerbeau.
It has since been re-recorded more than four thousand times and has sold more than 70 million copies. Listen to the new version:
On Instagram the musician explained the reasons why he decided to re-record the song. “Guilherme Araújo was my manager. For years he asked me to sing ‘La Mer’. When he died, I heard it,” the singer’s post begins.
He continued: “At a show in Paris, I sang ‘La Mer’ in tribute to him posthumously. The writer Christine Angot was in the audience. I think she was as moved as I was, since, having completed a film about her life, he asked me that I wanted to record the song as I had done years ago in Paris: alone with the guitar and at an ultra-slow pace. That’s how I recorded it.”
Produced by Caetano Veloso in collaboration with Lucas Nunes, the new version was recorded to be part of the soundtrack of the French documentary A familydebut film by writer Christine Angot.
Released worldwide during the 74th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival on Sunday the 18th, the production explores how a family deals with an incest situation.
La Mer marks Caetano Veloso’s first phonograph release since his thirteenth studio album, My coconut2021.
