The prime minister’s alliance is trying to put the defeat in Sardinia behind it
After defeat in the regional elections in Sardinia, the right-wing coalition of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni faces another test at the polls this Sunday (10), in the elections to elect the next governor of Abruzzo, in the center of the country.
Polling stations open from 7am to 11pm (local time) for 1.2 million voters in this region commanded since 2019 by Marco Marsilio, the first governor elected by Meloni’s party, Fratelli d’Italia (FdI), with the support of the League, from Matteo Salvini, and Força Itália (FI), by Antonio Tajani, both deputy prime minister.
As of midday, voter turnout was 15.80%, up more than two percentage points from the 13.33% rate recorded in the same period in the 2019 election.
Seeking re-election, Marsilio has only one opponent, the former rector of the University of Teramo Luciano D’Amico, supported by a coalition between the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), the populist Five Star Movement (M5S) and the Democratic Centrist Action.
The union between PD and M5S has already led the progressive Alessandra Todde to victory in Sardinia against Paolo Truzzu (FdI), a candidate personally supported by Meloni, on 25 February, but it is the first time that Ação joins the two parties in a election for governor.
For the opposition, the elections in Abruzzo are an opportunity to try to weaken the prime minister’s coalition, which has a large majority in Parliament and controls 14 of Italy’s 20 regions.
“It would be a hard blow for Giorgia Meloni, given that Abruzzo has become a bit of an FdI fiefdom,” M5S leader Giuseppe Conte, prime minister from 2018 to 2021, said last week.
The latest polls, released 15 days ago, gave a technical parity between the candidates, but with a numerical advantage for Marsilio. The opposition, however, hopes that Todde’s narrow victory over Meloni’s candidate in Sardinia can help reverse the trend in Abruzzo too. .
